Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Seven

What's happening lads and lasses, it's time for today's jaunt back to the early 1990s. Last time out we were dealt further blows in our fight against relegation (I negated to call it brave considering how abject we have been). If you missed the last episode than catch up by clicking here.

After our terrible showing against Luton, we continue to be the Christmas turkeys as we let Swindon carve us open 4-0 at Blundell Park. Once again we fail to recover from conceding an early goal and the game is as good as over when Glenn Hoddle taps into an empty net in the ninth minute of the second half with Craig Maskell adding insult to injury with six minutes left.

As it's now January, reinforcements are able to come in as we bring Wolves striker Andy Mutch and Derby central defender Andy Comyn to BP while Jim Dobbin leaves for Hibernian in a decent deal for us as he had less than six months remaining on his contract. Tony James also leaves for Brentford without having played a first team game for Town due to a long injury lay-off. The fee from the Dobbin and James sales allows a bit extra into the coffers which will aid me in my quest to bring a new goalkeeper in.

In the absence of John McDermott who is taking a deserved rest, Everton loanee Neil Moore deputises at right-back and takes just three minutes to make an impact as he plays a sumptuous ball for Neil Woods to slot past Alan Knight to give us the lead against Portsmouth on New Year's Day. Sadly for us, Pompey do what we failed to against Luton and do indeed recover from the early goal and by the sixteenth minute are 2-1 up through a quickfire Guy Whittingham brace. Paul Walsh adds a third early in the second half to knock the stuffing out of us and puncture any faint hopes of a comeback.

In the midweek leading up to our next encounter, Bristol City goalkeeper Andy Leaning becomes our third signing (and third Andy) of the transfer window as he is persuaded to swap the Westcountry for the East Coast to finally end my season-long hunt for a new custodian.

Excuse me for a minute while I type something that I haven't been able to do much this season. GRIMSBY TOWN HAVE WON A GAME OF FOOTBALL!!! Admittedly, it's against lower division opposition in the shape of Division Two's Bradford City in the FA Cup third round but hopefully Gary Croft's fine double might just give us a bit of a spark and boost morale ahead of the business end of the season. Maybe an unlikely FA Cup run is on the cards?....

I can say this until I'm blue in the face but hopefully we'll kick on now and pull clear of the drop zone while chasing down those above us. This is the third time I've said this now and you know what they say about third time lucky....

See you tomorrow!
