Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Eight

Here we go again, it's time for your daily dip into the 1992-93 season via the medium of Football Manager 2022. My Grimsby Town side have just qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup but are still looking precarious in the league. Let's see how we progress further.  After our cup victory, we're brought back down to earth with a massive bump as promotion contenders Newcastle give us a 4-0 thumping at Blundell Park as we serve up yet another abject performance to further my belief that we're probably destined for the drop.  To my dismay we ship four goals for the second game in a row when we leave South East London empty handed after Charlton Athletic beat us 4-2. There's little comfort in Clive Mendonca's double as results around us don't go in our favour and we're now very much looking over our shoulders at the drop zone.  Thankfully, we snatch ourselves a bit of breathing space as we nab a dramatic last-minute home win over Watford. We go ahead in ...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Seven

What's happening lads and lasses, it's time for today's jaunt back to the early 1990s. Last time out we were dealt further blows in our fight against relegation (I negated to call it brave considering how abject we have been). If you missed the last episode than catch up by clicking here.  After our terrible showing against Luton, we continue to be the Christmas turkeys as we let Swindon carve us open 4-0 at Blundell Park. Once again we fail to recover from conceding an early goal and the game is as good as over when Glenn Hoddle taps into an empty net in the ninth minute of the second half with Craig Maskell adding insult to injury with six minutes left.  As it's now January, reinforcements are able to come in as we bring Wolves striker Andy Mutch and Derby central defender Andy Comyn to BP while Jim Dobbin leaves for Hibernian in a decent deal for us as he had less than six months remaining on his contract. Tony James also leaves for Brentford without having played a ...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Six

Hello everyone and welcome to your daily dose of retromodern Football Manager goodness. If you were at Town's game last night then I hope you've dried out and if you bought a programme then I hope you enjoyed my brief cameo discussing my favourite Town shirt. If you missed yesterday's instalment and want to catch up then you can do so  by clicking here .  Unfortunately, our poor run continues as we fall to yet another defeat against another promotion chasing outfit in Luton Town. We're never really in the game and we perhaps didn't deserve anything from it anyway despite Clive Mendonca grabbing us a late equaliser with ten minutes left so it was perhaps justifiable rather than 'unbelievable' when Chris Kamara wins it for the home side at the death.  Sometimes football has a way of kicking you in the teeth in the most agonising of ways, Oxford probably thought that when we beat them earlier in the season and we're made to feel it when we lose 4-3 to West ...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Five

Hello everyone and welcome back to Alive And Kicking, our jaunt through the 1992-93 season in Football Manager 2022. We're into episode five now, if you missed yesterday's instalment then click  here  to catch up.  Any high hopes we had of turning a corner following our win over Barnsley are punctured as we go down 2-0 at Filbert Street to promotion chasing Leicester City. After being on the backfoot for the majority of the game but defending bravely, the dam bursts inside the final 20 minutes when a prolific young striker on loan from Liverpool by the name of Robbie Fowler (probably just a flash in the pan) scores twice in six minutes to leave us sinking without a trace.  In the intimidating atmosphere of The Den at Millwall, we allow ourselves to fall behind seemingly irretrievably as we're 2-1 down inside 25 minutes, Clive Mendonca gets us level just before the interval and we spend the majority of the second period in the ascendancy doing everything but score and...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Four

What's happening lads and lasses and welcome back to Alive And Kicking. We're coming in off the back of a torrid run of fixtures against teams in and around the play-off zone. If you missed it or you just want to put yourself through a bit of misery then you can do by  clicking here .  After a dismal run of results that saw us yield just two points from four games (admittedly against tough opposition higher up the table) we can probably consider ourselves a candidate for relegation unless things begin to improve. Sadly for us, we have two more tough outings as we face up to play-off contenders Watford and Notts County who are in the thick of the Division One title race.  Our trip to Vicarage Road is being televised which brings a few extra thousand pounds into the club. We're a still a few years away from Sky owning the coverage of the Endsleigh League so it's Yorkshire TV for us, presented by this guy.  Sadly we can't put on a show for the cameras as we sink ...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Three

Hello everyone we're back with another slice of retromodernism (if that's even a thing) as we take a peek at how my charges at Grimsby Town have been doing in the 1992-93 season. If you missed the last instalment (spoiler alert: we finally get a win!) then check it out  by clicking here .  We find ourselves on the verge of embarking on a potentially dismal run of form as we come up against a number of sides in and around the playoff picture.  There's also an interesting rumour doing the rounds regarding boardroom activity.... Just like our Coca-Cola Cup defeat at Sheffield United, one of our better performances comes in a defeat as we're unlucky to go down 2-1 away to league leaders Swindon Town at the County Ground. After Super Clive gives us a scarcely deserved first-half lead, we suddenly kick into gear and should really have been out of sight by the time Shaun Taylor heads home the equaliser. We're a little punch-drunk and the home side capitalise in the way any...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Two

Welcome back lads and lasses to Alive And Kicking, our jaunt through English football 30 years ago via the 1992-93 database on Football Manager 2022. If you missed episode one which opened our save as Grimsby Town in the Endsleigh League Division One then you can catch up  here .  With the transfer deadline looming, reinforcements come in the shape of Leicester's central defender Tony James who arrives in a £45,000 deal and he is joined by Everton's right-back/centre half Neil Moore who joins on a season-long loan deal. After at least one of the goals in the Derby County defeat was avoidable, my attempts to bring in a new goalkeeper falls short as a last-ditch attempt to bring Andy Woodman (yes, Town fans that one) in on loan from Crystal Palace was unable to completed before the window slammed shut.  After our dismal showing against Derby in our last Division One outing, we turn out another one at St. Andrews as we roll over to hosts Birmingham City and concede another f...

Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode One

It's 30 years since football changed forever with the foundation of the all-conquering Premier League and now thanks to the database created by MadScientist for Football Manager 2022, we're about to immerse ourselves in the magic and madness of the 1992-93 English football season.  I'm starting the save off as I would normally, in charge of my beloved Grimsby Town. Instead of the likes of Shaun Pearson, Harry Clifton and John McAtee at my disposal, I now possess the late, great Paul Futcher, our very own Captain Marvel Paul Groves and potent goal threat 'Super' Clive Mendonca in my arsenal. After two successive promotions in 1990 and 1991 before a lower mid-table finish in 1992, Town find themselves just a division below the Sky Sports funded gravy train. Promotion isn't my overall goal for the first season of the save however, I'd be more than happy to emulate Town's real life top half finish achieved at the end of 92-93.  ( There are a couple of slight...
