Alive And Kicking: Season One, Episode Eight

Here we go again, it's time for your daily dip into the 1992-93 season via the medium of Football Manager 2022. My Grimsby Town side have just qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup but are still looking precarious in the league. Let's see how we progress further. 



After our cup victory, we're brought back down to earth with a massive bump as promotion contenders Newcastle give us a 4-0 thumping at Blundell Park as we serve up yet another abject performance to further my belief that we're probably destined for the drop. 



To my dismay we ship four goals for the second game in a row when we leave South East London empty handed after Charlton Athletic beat us 4-2. There's little comfort in Clive Mendonca's double as results around us don't go in our favour and we're now very much looking over our shoulders at the drop zone. 



Thankfully, we snatch ourselves a bit of breathing space as we nab a dramatic last-minute home win over Watford. We go ahead in the first half thanks to a deserved effort from under-fire striker Ken Charlery and we should be out of sight by the time the visitors equalise through Gary Porter in the 67th minute. For once though we get our just desserts and the relief is palpable when Tony Rees nabs us a late, late winner to give us a deserved and crucial three points. 



The win over Watford give us a timely morale boost ahead of squaring up to Premier League opposition for the second time this season as we prepare to welcome Everton to Blundell Park. We did it in 1979 and in 1984, we couldn't scalp the Goodison Park club for a third time could we? As it happens, no we can't but we could hold our heads up high as we're beaten 1-0 after defending bravely until the dam finally bursts through veteran defender Dave Watson's header in the 64th minute. 


There's plenty of positives to be taken from the previous two games as we look to push on now and try and move away from the drop zone as the business end of the season approaches.

London Calling #1: The Non-League Haaland?

Yes lads and lasses it's the best day of the year for nerds like myself as Football Manager 2023 is finally unleashed into the gaming wild. For my long-term save on the game I'll be aiming to rule the footballing world using clubs only from the Greater London area (I explain in a little bit more detail  here ). Our adventure begins in the Vanarama National League South at Champion Hill with Dulwich Hamlet, here's how the opening stanza of my time with the club unfolded.  My task with my new club is clear, I'm expected to reach the VNS play-offs and utilise players that are 23 and under to fit in with the club's ethos. Buon giorno and welcome to the second instalment of my retro Italian adventure with Juventus in Championship Manager 97-98. If you missed last week's episode then you can catch up  here .  After our defeat to Milan in the last outing, the last thing we need is the Champions League creeping up on us, although we should turn over Maccabi Haifa on our home turf. Cue the music Perhaps my optimism was misplaced as we labour to a dour goalless draw at the Delle Alpi against our Israeli opponents.
